Mane scored the opening goal, before Milner's own goal and Wijnaldum's header had the Reds in front at the break. A nervy second half saw strikes for Dzeko and Nainggolan twice, but Roma could not deny Liverpool.

The Liverpool players collapse to the ground as Klopp dashes onto the pitch to join them. They were pushed close at the last, but largely looked comfortable.

Milner steals the ball and carries it forward, but he cannot beat Manolas. A smart turn allows the Roma defender to push his side forward.

There's a short stoppage as Nainggolan commits a foul and Henderson goes down. Dzeko is not happy with the Liverpool captain, who slowly gets back to his feet.

Cambio. SUB! Klopp was already preparing a second change and Solanke is on for Firmino.

Kolarov, after a series of crosses, tees up Nainggolan for the goal. Can Roma build on their lifeline?

Schick dances away from a trio of Liverpool players and the ball goes wide to Kolarov. Henderson clears. Dzeko knocks the ball back out to Kolarov and it's Klavan who volleys away.

Karius beats Dzeko to a long ball and, despite being inside his area, chooses to head instead of catching. Under returns the ball, but the goalkeeper is able to claim at the second attempt.

Cambio. SUB! A defensive change for Liverpool sees the tiring Mane replaced by Klavan, who forms a back three alongside Lovren and Van Dijk.

Antonucci crosses and Karius claims. Up goes another roar of "Allez! Allez! Allez!" A tight offside call goes against Salah at the other end.

Alisson is very lucky to escape! He gives the ball away to Salah twice and then appears to foul the Liverpool man outside his area to win the ball back. The crowd enjoy that one, but the goalkeeper is fortunate.

SAVE! Dzeko gets the better of Alexander-Arnold again! In behind, he shoots across Karius, who half-saves and sees Lovren clear.

WIDE! Nainggolan's corner picks out Dzeko for a volley but he cannot find the target. Roma still need three goals to take this to extra-time.

Under gets in behind Robertson again, but a poor touch allows Liverpool to escape. Robertson clears another attack for a corner...

OVER! Close from Schick! Antonucci inadvertently clears Kolarov's cross, but Fazio charges forward to lay the ball into Schick's path. A snapshot just clears the crossbar.

Henderson has been brilliant again for Liverpool in this one. He wins the ball for Salah to feed Firmino, but a poor first touch allows Kolarov in to win the foul.

Tarjeta Amarilla. YELLOW! Mane has got the better of Florenzi all night and the Roma man's frustration boils over with an awful challenge from behind. He goes into the book.

Roma might just have run out of steam. Liverpool are keeping the ball relatively comfortably.

Dzeko is both Roma's most likely threat and their chief creator. He drops deep to lift a pass through the centre, but Karius is unchallenged.

Mane chases after a fine Henderson pass down the left flank and then turns Florenzi, heading for the area. Fazio gets across and ushers the ball back to Alisson.

OVER! Dzeko gets down the left - once again - and cuts inside to tee up Gonalons. A wild strike flies over the top.

Another slip in the Roma defence and Salah finds Firmino. He is crowded out and Roma clear.

SAVE! Firmino almost puts the tie to bed! A neat move, started by Milner, ends with Salah feeding his strike partner and a low finish is turned away by the boot of Allison.

OVER! Dzeko gets free this time, from Nainggolan's cross, but volleys well over the top on the turn.

Van Dijk has been brilliant at the back, competing with Dzeko for every header. Robertson dives in and makes a telling defensive contribution, too.

CLOSE! Liverpool are all over the place again! Alexander-Arnold is beaten and the ball is scrambled clear in front of Karius, before De Rossi teases a pass back into Dzeko. He turns and flashes an effort wide.

Liverpool have possession and a moment of relief, with Alexander-Arnold struggling in this second half. Roma are soon on the front foot again.

Van Dijk heads clear from the corner and Under then cannot keep the ball in play when Roma build again. Liverpool escape.

BLOCK! A huge Alexander-Arnold block! He smashes Dzeko's header straight at Schick but redeems himself by diving in front of El Shaarawy's rebound. It looks to strike the defender's hand...

Another offside flag and Mane is denied, although he sends a header wide from close range. Back come Roma. This is all very tight, very nervy.

The ball is bouncing around the midfield right now. Liverpool are keeping Roma pressed back towards their own goal.

SAVE! Karius just about gathers! A gorgeous De Rossi pass allows Under to get in ahead of Robertson and flick towards goal, the goalkeeper claiming just in front of the goal-line.

A marvellous Mane pass is gathered by Salah this time. He feeds Wijnaldum, but the referee adjudges the midfielder to have fouled Kolarov as he chases the ball.

This has been a frustrating evening for Salah. Wijnaldum breaks and finds Firmino, who looks for Salah. Manolas is there first.

Roma are enjoying a good spell, pushing Kolarov forward as Liverpool defend in numbers. Dzeko is the danger-man in the middle.

OVER! Kolarov crosses and Dzeko heads, but the ball loops over the top.

Alexander-Arnold fouls Dzeko on the corner of the area. A chance for Roma...

Roma v Liverpool is now the highest scoring Champions League semi-final ever (currently 11 goals).

Liverpool are pushing! First Salah wants a penalty as the ball strikes Nainggolan's arm - that would be harsh - before Robertson hares away down the left and crosses. The ball is too far ahead of Salah.

Salah steals the ball from Manolas by the corner flag but cannot then beat the next man as he sets course for goal. Alisson gathers.

Cambio. SUB! And that prompts an attacking Roma change. Under is on for Pellegrini.

Firmino and Mane just have a misunderstanding at the last second! Lovren smashes a ball up to Salah, who can only knock the ball back to Firmino. The chance dies when he gets the pass wrong.

Mane gets into a crossing position but can only pick out a defender in the middle. Some lovely Schick footwork prompts a counter, but he cannot then link up with El Shaarawy at the other end.

Two big offside calls! Robertson dashes away from a pair of challenges and feeds Salah, who is beyond the last man. Crucially, at the other end, Dzeko is flagged just as Karius brings him down. Relief for Liverpool.

A nervy moment for Alisson as he waits for the ball to enter his area and almost allows Firmino to get a touch. The goalkeeper just about claims.

Corner to Roma, Van Dijk nipping in ahead of Dzeko. The set-piece goes short and then deep to Schick, whose header is claimed by Karius.

SAVE! Firmino breaks and feeds Salah, whose shot deflects and bobbles through to Alisson. Liverpool will surely have opportunities to add to their lead as Roma come forward.

Almost an early opening for Roma! Nainggolan crosses from the left and picks out Pellegrini on the opposite flank, but his touch deserts him at the crucial moment.

KICK-OFF: Milner gets us back under way in Rome. The Liverpool fans are making all the noise.

An equaliser followed from another Liverpool man, Milner inadvertently finding his own net, but Wijnaldum's header restored the Reds' lead. Klopp's men are well on their way to another Champions League final.

Roma started on the front foot, as they did eight days ago, but they conceded the opener, as they did eight days ago. Mane struck on the break.

Another scintilating half of football and another successful 45 minutes for Liverpool. Roma need four goals, without return, just to take this to extra-time.

WIDE! Awful! That is a spectacular effort. Pellegrini thrashes the free-kick high and wide and quite possibly out of the ground. He could and should do so much better.

Tarjeta Amarilla. YELLOW! Lovren halts the counter but does so illegally, pushing El Shaarawy to the ground in a dangerous position on the Roma left. Free-kick, around 20 yards from goal...

This game is so stretched. Firmino's shot on the edge of the Roma box is blocked and the hosts soon break.

WIDE! Nainggolan nods the ball into Florenzi's path and he slices wide of the near right-hand post. He had men up in support.

Liverpool are only the second team to have scored at least 20 goals in away games in a single Champions League campaign, after Real Madrid in 2013-14.

The Liverpool fans are cheering every pass as the visitors move the ball well in the Roma half. Salah feeds Mane, but a fancy flick does not come off and the ball goes out for a goal-kick.

Fury among the home supporters! El Shaarawy goes down in the area, following a swift Roma break, but there appears to be little contact from Alexander-Arnold. The referee waves optimistic appeals away.

Milner's corner is nodded clear by Dzeko. Fazio hooks away a Robertson delivery.

Corner to Liverpool! Salah is the visitors' furthest men forward and Firmino gets the pass right this time. Salah shoots, Fazio blocks and the ball bounces wide.

The set-piece bounces through from right to left, with Kolarov crossing again and Karius punching bravely. He stays down for a second as Mane counters, before lifting himself in time for Roma to recover the ball.

Another deflected shot, this time from Dzeko's effort, bounces harmlessly wide. It will be a Roma corner, though.

BLOCK! Big block from Manolas. Salah has so much space and teases a pass between defenders to Firmino. Manolas dives at the forward's feet and knocks the ball to safety.

POST! Almost a second Roma equaliser through El Shaarawy! He goes for goal from 25 yards and a seemingly tame effort deflects beyond Karius and against the foot of the post. The goalkeeper claims a cross as Roma fling another ball in.

Lovren and Henderson each miss tackles in the midfield and Roma move down the left. El Shaarawy keeps the ball in play by the corner flag, but his touch bounces off Alexander-Arnold and then back onto the winger and behind. Goal-kick.

A foul on Mane relieves the pressure on Liverpool as Roma push on down the right. Van Dijk might require a second to recover, having been caught by a stray boot.

A free-kick gives Roma the opportunity to get men forward in attack. Wijnaldum hooks clear, but El Shaarawy keeps the ball in and crosses from a second delivery. Liverpool get the ball away, yet their counter fails with Salah.

Wijnaldum has scored his 19th goal for an English club (11 Newcastle, 8 Liverpool), but this was his first away from home.

And now Liverpool have a corner. Salah chases hard from Firmino's flick and a desperate challenge knocks the ball behind.

The travelling Liverpool fans are certainly enjoying themselves, allez-allez-allezing even as Roma attack again.

SAVE! Alisson denies Mane a second! This is a wonderful piece of play from Robertson, too. He tears away down the left, beats a couple of men and reaches the byline. A square pass tees up Mane, but Alisson blocks. Corner.

Crucial defending from Manolas, covering to get in ahead of Salah when Firmino lofts a ball through. Milner then earns a word of caution from the referee as he concedes a foul.

And now Alexander-Arnold goes down as Kolarov steps on his foot. No foul and no treatment required. He's back on his feet.

Time and time again, Roma are looking to their left flank. Kolarov is a threat and he fancies his chances up against Alexander-Arnold.

El Shaarawy hits the byline and crosses, but Karius claims. Liverpool can push up.

Liverpool are just looking to take the pace out of this one. The good spell following their goal was halted by the equaliser.

Milner's own goal was the first Liverpool have scored in a Champions League game since John Arne Riise's in the semi-final first leg against Chelsea in 2007-08.

The home crowd have been lifted again by that one, Liverpool's possession jeered loudly. They are keeping the ball really well, though.

SAVE! Salah cuts inside from the right and curls low, but Alisson saves. Roma are playing a back four but, with their full-backs pushed on, they are even more exposed right now than they were for much of the first leg.

There is frustration already for the home side. Pellegrini fouls Milner, who takes his time getting to his feet. Liverpool build again.

Roma now need four goals and Liverpool are sensing the opportunity to gain some control. They move the ball side-to-side in the opposition area for the first time.

Back come Roma. Dzeko gets in on the left and his cross is turned clear. Nainggolan, looking to redeem himself, hacks over the top.

Liverpool go chasing a second as Salah and Wijnaldum trade passes. Both men want a foul 20 yards from goal, but Alisson collects.

The goal stems from an awful, awful Nainggolan pass. He gifts the ball to Firmino and Roma were immediately on the back foot, unable to prevent the Brazilian from feeding his team-mate.

Appeal? Mane goes down just inside the area, under pressure from Manolas. No foul.

Every time Liverpool misplace a pass, a roar goes up among the home supporters. It's all Roma so far.

No flag against Dzeko! Van Dijk, back on the left, lets the ball bounce and Robertson cannot haul back the striker. He squares, but there's nobody in the centre.

Liverpool need to gain a foothold. Even at this early stage, their defensive third is coming under siege. A goal would make things very interesting indeed.

Roma are straight onto the front foot, chasing an early goal - as they did against Barcelona. Liverpool conceded very quickly at Manchester City in the last round.

The atmosphere is building in Rome. The teams will be with us shortly. A place in the final, to face Real Madrid, is at stake and this should be a cracker!

Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp, meanwhile, said: "If this team goes to the final, it would be an outstanding achievement already. It is not the prize we want because, if you go to a final, of course you have to think a little bit bigger, but it would be something we could not have expected at the start of the season."

Eusebio Di Francesco, the Roma coach, is optimistic of replicating the defeat of Barca. "Repeating is always difficult, but we have the right mentality and our supporters can help us pull off another miracle," he said yesterday.

The first leg produced the joint-most goals of any Champions League semi-final game (seven, as when Ajax beat Bayern Munich 5-2 in 1995).

Liverpool line up as expected, with Wijnaldum replacing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from the first-leg side. Mane is fit to start and youngster Woodburn is on the bench.
